Here Are Some Unusual Ideas of Kids’ Birthday Cakes That Are Sure To Be a Hit

Kids can be the toughest critics, especially when it comes to something as vital as the birthday cake. Here are some cake ideas that will get you those 5 stars.

Planning a kids’ birthday party involves a lot of excitement, especially from the little ones. The decorations, return gifts, games and theme—everything is colorful and just slightly over the top. Add into this mix an exciting and unique cake, and you have yourself a hit party!

Think drama and fanfare. The more dramatic a cake, the more they’ll appreciate it. So, instead of just baking a simple cake, aim to make edible works of art for them. Get into the spirit of the party by channeling your own creativity and making a cake that’s more than just something to eat—it’s an unforgettable experience for the kids, one they’ll remember and cherish for years to come. Here are some ideas that we are sure will impress kids, the toughest critics when it comes to cakes.

Create an Interactive Cake Decoration Station

Bake a simple, plain vanilla or chocolate cake. Or perhaps two or three small cakes of different flavors. Cut them into small squares and offer the plain pieces to the kids. Then they can go over to the decoration station, where you will place a variety of colorful frostings, different varieties of toppings like chopped nuts and chocolate chips, and decoration options like sprinkles, edible glitter and other creative decorations. For the more creative ones, also offer colored fondants and a small rolling pin and molds so they can make unique shapes with it. You will notice intense excitement as they go about decorating their cake pieces. Not only is it cake, it also doubles as a fun activity and keeps them busy for a while.

P.S.: Be ready for things to get really, and we mean really, messy.

Create a Cupcake Bouquet

Bake cupcakes of different flavors and topped with different colored frostings in the shapes of flowers and leaves, made with different shaped nozzles. Top your creative creations with edible flowers and using long, thin sticks, arrange them as a bouquet in a beautiful cane basket. The kids can choose whichever cupcake they want and enjoy the part where they get to eat flowers. Remember to caution them that not all flowers found in nature can be eaten!

Create a Cake With a Hidden Surprise Inside

Bake a cake that looks simple and plain on the outside. Perhaps a simple chocolate cake with chocolate frosting or a vanilla cake with buttercream frosting? But once the kid whose birthday it is cuts into the cake, they’ll find a surprise inside. This could be a rainbow cake with different colored layers on the inside. Or, you could stuff the inside with edible candies. To get even more creative, you can fill small toys inside in safely sealed containers. Tell them how many there are inside and challenge them to find all of them. The cake will be devoured in seconds, but the memories the kids are building will be with them forever.

Create a Glow in the Dark Cake

This is an exciting idea for the adults as well, so imagine the fun kids will have with it. Bake a simple cake and set aside. Make a buttercream frosting and add black food coloring, and cover the entire cake with the black frosting. Add any designs or a happy birthday message on top with white frosting or some other light color like baby pink or sky blue. Then use edible glow in the dark color pigment or powder mixed in lemon juice to create colorful liquids. Using a brush, splatter these colors onto the cake. Remember to turn down the lights when it's time to cut the cake and see how impressed the kids are with your creation.

Create a Rainbow Cake

This is going to be a huge cake and requires a good deal of time to make, so pre planning is key. Make different sizes in different colors of the rainbow. Stack them on top of each other, adding support sticks inside so the cake stays in shape. Then, create frosting of the same colors and top each layer accordingly. If you want something that doesn't require as much hassle, simply create one white cake and make frostings of the seven colors. Create uneven lines in the correct order on the sides of the cake for a simpler rainbow experience.
