Recipe For Classic Apple Pie

Ingredients:

For the Buttery Pie Crust:

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 6–8 tbsp ice water

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6–7 medium apples
  • ¾ cup sugar (adjust based on apple sweetness)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp butter (for dotting on top before sealing)

For Topping:

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp milk or cream
  • Sugar for sprinkling

Method:

Method

Step 1: Make the Pie Dough

Take a large bowl and combine flour, salt and sugar in it. Sift if you want to remove lumps. Add cold butter and cut it into the flour then use your fingertips to rub the butter well with flour until it looks like coarse crumbs. Now, add ice water to it gradually 1 tablespoon at a time and knead it until the dough holds together. Knead the dough well and divide it into 2 discs for the upper crust and the bottom crust of the pie. Wrap it into a cling film and refrigerate for 1 hour before using.

Step 2: Prepare the Apple Filling

Now prepare the apple pie filling by peeling the apples, taking the seeds out and slicing into thin pieces. Toss the apple pieces with sugar, flour, cinnamon powder, nutmeg, lemon juice and vanilla extract. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to develop and pierce through the apples. The acidity from lemon juice will help all the flavors penetrate through the thick skin of apples and it will make the apples tender as well. While the apples are resting, roll out the dough.

Step 3: Assemble the Pie

Set the oven to 200°C or 400°F depending on the oven settings to preheat it. Take out one dough disc and roll it out to a thick sheet. Line it in a 9 inch pie pan and press it gently to make it aligned with the shape of the pan. Add the apple filling over it and dot with small pieces of butter in between. Roll out the second dough disc to a thick sheet and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges and make a few holes on the top. Trim the edges and brush it with egg wash. Sprinkle sugar on top of it to make the crust crunchy and glossy.

Step 4: Bake

Step 4 Bake

Now it is time to bake the pie. Put the prepared pie in a preheated oven and bake it for 20 minutes at 200°C. After 20 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 175°C and bake for another 35 to 40 minutes until the pie turns golden brown and bubbly. Once baked, take it out of the oven and let cool for at least an hour. Piping hot pie can burst up and lose the structure after you cut it up directly, therefore cooling is necessary.

Step 5: Serve

After the pie has cooled down, it is time to serve. Slice the pie into triangles and top it off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Decorate it with lovely messages for your parents and serve this warming treat to express your love.
