What is Chocolate Shrikhand?

Chocolate Shrikhand is a modern twist on the old-school Maharashtrian dessert made from a thick, strained curd. The traditional version had flavors of cardamom and saffron, and was also known for a smooth texture, gentle sweetness, and cooling nature. This version brings in cocoa and cream together, turning it into a rich chocolate shrikhand that still has the original method and appeals to modern tastes.

Texture & Sweetness Tips

  1. Always use fresh, full-fat curd for the best creamy base.
  2. Hang the curd for at least 7-8 hours to get all the excess whey drained out properly.
  3. Use a sifter when adding cocoa powder to avoid lumps and a bitter taste.
  4. Add powdered sugar gradually and taste as you go along.
  5. A little bit of fresh cream can be good, but add it separately for the best results.
  6. Give it some time to chill before serving so all the flavors can settle and it thickens naturally.

Serving Ideas

  1. Serve it up chilled with some hot puris for the traditional combo.
  2. Present it in a fancy dessert bowl, topped off with some nuts and cocoa dust.
  3. Layer it in some glasses with some biscuit crumbs for a fusion dessert that's out of this world.
  4. Use it as a filling for some mini tart shells.
  5. Top it off with some fresh berries for a fun and modern twist.
