Step 1: Prepare Your Pan

Set the oven to 175°C (350°F) for preheating. Preheating is necessary to cook the brownies evenly. Line one 8 by 8 inch brownie pan or a square cake tin with parchment paper. If you don’t have paper, you can also grease the tin with butter or oil.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

Take a large mixing bowl and in it sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Sifting removes grains and breaks lumps from the dry ingredients which leads to a smooth and even texture. After mixing well, set it aside. If you want a smooth texture in brownie, do not skip this step.

Step 3: Make the Batter

Take a separate bowl and in it whisk melted unsalted butter with both brown sugar and granulated sugar until it becomes smooth and creamy. After that, add eggs one at a time and mix after adding each egg. After all the eggs are in, stir in vanilla extract. Then, fold in the dry ingredient mixture gradually and evenly. Be careful to not overmix the batter, this will help keep the brownie texture fudgy. When you overmix, the batter will turn airy and brownies will be hard and dry.

Step 4: Add Goodies

Now after mixing the base ingredients, fold in chocolate chips and nuts gently. This will add a delightful texture into the brownie batter. If you want to experience a smooth texture, you can skip adding nuts.

Step 5: Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smoothen out the top with the help of a spatula. Tap the filled pan on the table to remove air bubbles. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes and check doneness by inserting a toothpick in the middle of the brownie. If the toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs means the brownie is ready. Take the brownie tin out.

Step 6: Cool and Serve

Let the brownies cool off in the tin first before cutting. When you cut piping hot brownies, they may break apart. Once cooled, slice into squares and serve with your desired toppings and sides. Brownies go best with chocolate ganache drizzle and vanilla ice cream on top!

  1. To make brownies extra gooey, slightly underbake by 2 minutes. Taking brownies out 2 minutes before the suggested cook time will keep the brownies from cooking for longer and thus make the texture gooey.
  2. Dust the brownies with powdered sugar or with a drizzle of melted chocolate to create a festive look and add to the appeal.
  3. Switch nuts with a few Oreo chunks or some dry fruits for a twist. Oreo cookies will make the brownies crunchy without feeling a little off and contrasting.
