If you love Dharwad Peda, you should know that its story begins with the founding of the Thakur family in the town of Dharwad in the late 19th century
Ram Ratan Singh Thakur, a scholar and Sanskrit pandit, established a sweet shop in Dharwad, called Ramdev Thakur and Sons, which was the birthplace of the iconic Dharwad Peda.
Ram Ratan Singh Thakur was not just a connoisseur of sweets but also an innovator. He combined the richness of khoa with other ingredients to create a unique and distinctive sweet
Dharwad peda was prepared from the milk of Dharwadi buffaloes raised by the Gavali community in and around Dharwad. Ram Ratan’s grandson Babu Singh Thakur helped expand the family business further
Babu Singh started making these pedhas in their Line Bazaar store and the peda came to also be called locally as the "Line Bazaar Peda
What sets Dharwad Peda apart is its distinctive taste and texture. The peda is known for its crumbly and melt-in-the-mouth texture; the use of pure cow's milk khoa and ghee contributes to its unique flavor profile.
The Thakur family continued the tradition of making Dharwad Peda, passing down the closely guarded recipe through generations.
The sweet gained immense popularity not only in Dharwad but also across Karnataka and beyond and showcased the culinary craftsmanship of the Thakur family.
