There is something oh-so soul warming about mishti doi, especially for Bengalis who seek something sweet after most traditional meals. While mishti doi is mildly sweet, for some, it is not sweet enough, and for others, they long for something fun and fusion. So, we bring you tips and tricks on how to create the perfect mishti doi Oreo fusion dessert! This fusion traditional Bengali dessert is a great after meal treat, after a heavy “bhuri bhoj” as Bengalis like to call their heavy afternoon meals. This fusion dessert is something that both kids and adults alike will relish.

What works with this duo is that the pairing of the creamy, fermented sweetness of mishti doi, works quite well with the chocolatey crunch of the Oreos for a truly memorable dessert. Let us walk you through the tips and tricks to perfect this unusual combination, that somehow works just right.

Start with a Homemade Creamy Mishti Doi Base

Of course, the star of the show is the mishti doi itself. We have a simple recipe for that:

Ingredients

  • - 6 cups milk, full cream
  • - 4 tbsp sugar
  • - 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • - 2 tsp water
  • - 4 tsp curd
  • - A few dry fruits, chopped

Instructions

  1. Take a large thick-bottom pan and heat all of the milk, on medium flame. Stir sometimes and bring it to a boil. Once it starts to boil, add 2 tbsp of sugar and stir well.
  2. Keep boiling the milk until it thickens and stir occasionally, till the milk reduces to half.
  3. In another thick bottomed pan, add the 2 tablespoons of brown sugar along with a teaspoon of water. Keep the heat on medium and stir until the sugar caramelizes.
  4. Pour the caramelised sugar into the boiled milk, stir well and boil the milk again. Once combined, remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  5. Once the milk is just warm to the touch, transfer into a clay pot (matir bhaar) or any other container of your choice.
  6. Add in a teaspoon of curd and stir well. Then cover it and store it in a warm place for at least 8 hours for it to allow it to set completely.
  7. After 8 hours, refrigerate the curd for 2 hours to get a nice and creamy quality.
  8. Once ready to eat, garnish with chopped nuts of choice.

Note: To make this mishti doi, use full-fat milk to achieve that perfect texture. For ordinary curd, minus the sweetness, vinegar or lemon juice works wonders, but for mishti doi, litte bit of caramelized sugar will deepen its flavor and make it what it is. We highly reccommend using a clay pot to set the Mishti Doi, as the pot naturally absorbs excess moisture and lends an earthy aroma that enhances the overall experience of digging into the curd.

Layer in Crushed Oreos Thoughtfully

Rather than just sprinkling crushed Oreos on top, layer them like a parfait or just add them at the bottom of the mishti doi vessel. For the parfait option, alternate between the Mishti Doi and generous spoonfuls of crushed Oreos as for the other one, simply add the crushed Oreos to the bottom of your serving bowl and put the mishti doi over it.

3. Infuse with Cardamom or Saffron

Mishti Doi in itself is quite relishing to the palate, to elevate the flavors, infuse it with Mishti Doi with subtle notes of cardamom or saffron which complements the flavor of the sweet curd. A pinch of freshly ground cardamom or a few strands of saffron soaked in warm milk can add a delicate aroma and hint of flavor into your already extraordinary curd.

4. Add a Gooey Center or Topping

If Oreo does not seem enough to you, try this: spoon a bit of dark chocolate ganache or caramel sauce between scoops of mishti doi for a surprise center. If that seems like too much effort, just drizzle either on top of your mishti doi, who seriously swear by their sweets. You could also sneak in a whole Oreo or even a soft chocolate truffle in the middle of the mishti doi if you like being extra when it comes to upgrading traditional desserts.

5. Garnish Like a Pro

Presentation matters, especially for such a fusion dessert since you went the extra mile to add an extra ingredient to an already complete dessert. Top the dessert with a swirl of whipped cream, an Oreo, or a light dusting of crushed pistachios or edible rose petals. Serve it chilled in clear dessert jars or traditional clay pots, to really impress your guests.
