What to Look for in a Post-Surgery Dessert
If you've undergone surgery, the foods you consume will play a crucial role in your recovery and healing. You'll have to make the right dietary choices and avoid all unhealthy foods to prevent digestive problems, delayed recovery, and increased risk of postoperative infections.
During this time, we recommend that you speak to a doctor or nutritionist to better understand your dietary needs and restrictions. They will give the best advice based on the severity of your post-surgery condition, age, height, weight, and other pre-existing medical issues. For instance, if you’ve had dental surgery, then you may need to have liquids, or if you’ve had bowel surgery, you may need to have low-fiber foods to prevent loose stools. But we also know that eating nutrient-dense foods is a necessity during post-op care. Their palatability is also equally important, considering that your appetite may become lean. So, just because you're in a delicate condition that requires the utmost care, doesn't mean you have to cut out sweets and only eat bland foods. For this very reason, we have compiled a short list of dessert recipes that are high on nutrition and will definitely tickle your taste buds. These recipes are designed to provide both comfort and adequate nutrition during this recovery journey.
When selecting the post-surgery diet, pay special attention to desserts. A good option would be something that is not very hard to chew and easy to digest. A simple checklist can help:
Soft or liquid texture for easier eating and digestion
Nutrient-dense ingredients that provide vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and zinc, which support normal wound healing
Low in refined sugar to avoid unnecessary added sugar
Hydrating ingredients, such as fruits, yogurt, or milk
Simple recipes that require minimal preparation and effort during recovery
Recipe 1: Fresh Fruit Salad with Yogurt and Honey
Ingredients:
- Assorted fresh fruits of your choice (papaya, kiwi, banana, berries, apple)
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
- 2-3 tbsp of yogurt (store bought or homemade)
Instructions:
Dice all your fruits into bite sized pieces and assemble them in a bowl.
Pour the lemon juice and give the fruits a quick toss.
Then add your sweetener if you want the fruit bowl sweeter.
Follow this up with the yogurt. Mix well and serve chilled.
Why it works for recovery
This light dessert recipe is good for post-surgery patients because fresh fruit will give vitamin C to heal wounds and boost immunity, while yogurt contains protein and probiotics that are beneficial for digestion after antibiotics. Lemon juice may help with digestion too.
Recipe 2: Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce
Ingredients:
- 2-3 apples (you can use more if you can only find small apples)
- ¾ cup water
- ½ tsp cinnamon powder
- ¾ cup pure maple syrup (check label for added sugars)
Instructions:
Peel, core, and dice your apples. Then put them in a medium saucepan with the water, maple syrup, and cinnamon.
Cook this on medium flame for 15-20 minutes with the lid on. You can try to pierce the apples with a fork to check how much they have softened.
Once you think the apples are sufficiently cooked, take them off the heat and let them cool.
Then you can either use a masher or blend it till it's reached a smooth consistency in your mixer-grinder.
You can have this applesauce as is, especially if you cannot eat solid food. Otherwise, you can sweeten your fruit salad with it.
Applesauce can be a beneficial post-surgery recovery foodafter dental or jaw surgery, and other procedures requiring a semi-liquid diet.
Why it works for recovery
Apples provide pectin for gut health, while cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties. Its soft texture suits semi-solid diets, and its natural sugars offer gentle sweetness without relying on processed sweets.
Recipe 3: Overnight Chia Seed Pudding
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tsp maple syrup or sweetener of your choice
- ¾ cup dairy or non-dairy milk
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
- Fruits of your choice
Instructions:
Take a mason jar or any jar you have at hand, and add all the above ingredients to it.
Give it a good mix. This is essential so the chia seeds don’t clump when you set them in the fridge overnight.
Leave this in the fridge overnight so that the chia seeds can absorb the milk and become plump.
You can have this overnight pudding with the leftover salad, replace maple syrup and use applesauce as a sweetener, or just have it with your favorite fruits.
Why it works for recovery
Overnight chia pudding is a suitable post-surgery recovery food because chia seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and fiber. It is a no-chew soft food and easy to prepare the night before. Non-dairy milk can also be used for people who are lactose intolerant or on a dairy-restricted diet.
Recipe 4: Frozen Banana Bites with Greek Yogurt
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- 5-6 tbsp Greek yogurt
- A little water
Instructions:
Slice the bananas into rounds and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Gently flatten them using a spoon or the bottom of a glass.
Pour the Greek yogurt loosened with some water over the banana bites.
Pop them in the freezer for two hours and enjoy.
Why it works for recovery
These banana bites may fit in with post-surgery recovery foods since bananas contain potassium, and Greek yogurt contains protein needed for tissue repair. The cool texture may also be soothing following certain procedures, but it's best to check with your doctor if you can eat these types of cold food shortly after surgery. Note: Frozen or very cold foods may not be suitable immediately after certain dental, throat, or abdominal surgeries. Check with a doctor before including them during the early days of recovery.
Recipe 5: Nourishing Berry Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of berries (you can use fresh or frozen)
- 1 banana
- 2-3 tbsp of dairy or non-dairy milk (you can also use coconut water)
- Chopped fruits of choice
- Chopped almonds
- Hemp seeds
- Chia seeds
Instructions:
Blend the berries, banana, and milk till it turns into a thick and smooth paste. If you want your smoothie soupy, feel free to add more liquid.
Pour it into a serving bowl and top it with fruits, nuts, and seeds.
You can store the leftover smoothie in the fridge and consume it the next day.
Why it works for recovery
This smoothie bowl would be a part of post-surgery foods due to its content of antioxidants and vitamins from berries, potassium from banana, protein from hemp and chia seeds, and omega-3 fatty acids. For patients on a liquid diet, it could be blended into a smooth consistency without any toppings or mixed with soft toppings if the diet allows for semi-solid foods.
