Written by jheelum basu | October 29, 2025

Halloween season is all about spooky decorations, scary outfits, and themed desserts that capture the true essence of the festival that celebrates ghosts, death, and gore, all wrapped in fun and frolic. And these Graveyard Dirt-themed Cadbury Graveyard Brownies are one of the most popular Halloween desserts of modern times.

While the pudding-based Graveyard Dirt cakes are a staple of Halloween, the brownie version of the traditional dessert also does the same job. It is nothing but another classic display of theme-based baking expertise that takes you straight to a dark, daunting, hair-raising cemetery ground with tombstones lined up in front of you, but all on a baking tray. While graveyards are scary, eating a piece of this chocolatey delight will for sure enhance the festive spirit like nothing else.

So, this Halloween, just whip up a batch (or as much as you require) of warm, gooey, soft chocolate brownies first and allow them to chill. If you are in a hurry, you may also consider using the store-bought brownie mixes for the batter. However, nothing beats the taste of those freshly baked, homemade, fudgy brownies. Once the brownies are ready, get on with the garnishing part and decorate the brownies to create that spooky, scary, cemetery-like feeling in the best possible way. Here, we have assembled a detailed step-by-step guide to try the Cadbury Graveyard Brownies at home this Halloween.

  • ½ cup Halloween candies and sprinkles (Gummy worms, bones, skulls, pumpkins)
  • Melted chocolate

Cadbury Graveyard Brownies with Edible Tombstones: Step-by-step guide

Prepare the brownie

Step 1:

Start by preheating the oven to 180 °C.

Keep a pan prepared by lining it with a baking sheet and keep it aside.

Step 2:

In a heatproof bowl, melt the butter and semisweet chocolate chips. Place it in the microwave for three rounds, each of 30 seconds. Please note that stirring in between until smooth is important.

Step 3:

Allow the butter and chocolate mixture to cool down properly for 5 minutes. It is often recommended to pick cooking chocolate chips from the baking section of the supermarket, as they are more compatible with baking than regular eating chocolates. Keep a small portion of the melted chocolate aside for using it later on the cookie tombstones.

Step 4:

Now add flour, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, eggs, and vanilla essence. Keep stirring the mixture until all the ingredients are incorporated well and the batter achieves a smooth consistency.

Step 5:

Slowly pour the batter into the prepared pan. Use a spatula to smooth the surface and bake it in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean yet a bit moist to ensure fudginess.

Step 6:

Take the pan out of the oven and allow the freshly baked fudgy brownie to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before lifting the brownie out of the pan. You may also refrigerate it for some time so that it firms up well.

Step 7:

Once the brownie is out of the refrigerator, slice it with a warm and sharp knife to get neat squares and serve. You may also consider a light chocolate drizzle on top for more indulgence.

Create the ultimate ‘Graveyard Dirt’ appearance

Step 1:

Take Oreo cookies in a plastic bag and crush them well using a rolling pin. Otherwise, you may also take the help of a food processor.

Step 2:

Once the brownies cool down, pour crushed Oreo crumbs to create the "dirt" layer on top of the brownies.

Step 3:

Place the Milano cookies and push the bottom parts of the cookies into the ‘dirt’ layer to create the edible tombstones.

Step 3:

Use a piping bag to write R.I.P. on the edible cookie tombstones with melted chocolate.

Step 4:

Now you may scatter the gummy worms, candy pumpkins, bones, eyes, and skull candies to create the ultimate Halloween look.

Step 5:

Once done, you may cut them into brownie pieces, each containing at least one edible tombstone, and serve them on a plate.
